Zerya is a refugee woman in her 50s living in Paris. She was forced to leave her home country at the age of 22 due to the chemical gas attack on the city of Halabja by Saddam Hussein on March 16, 1988. She has been living in France for 30 years. While visiting an art exhibition in Paris, Zerya comes across René Magritte's painting 'This is not an apple' from the 'Betrayal of Images' series. This painting brings forth Zerya's past traumas. Zerya establishes both a historical and aesthetic connection between Magritte's painting and the 'apple with cloves', which expresses love in Kurdish mythology, but for her the smell of apples in the gas used in the massacre.
