Press Conference featuring this year’s programme and introductions of 6th Bosphorus Film Festival to kick off on October 26 was realized at Soho House Istanbul. The festival president, Ogün Şanlıer emphasized the contributions of Bosphorus Film Festival to the national film industry. Bringing the latest, awarded works from Turkey and the world cinema to the Istanbulite cinephiles, 6th Bosphorus Film Festival will showcase 88 films made by 90 directors from 41 countries!

 

Organized with the support of Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Cinema, under the main sponsorship of Union of the Bosphorus Municipalities, and with the support of TRT as the Institutional Partner, Anadolu Agency as the Global Communication Partner, TV+ as the Communication Partner and Türkmedya as the Institutional Communication Partner, 6th Bosphorus Film Festival kicks off on October 26. The Press Conference of the festival, to run until November 3, was realized today at Soho House Istanbul.

 

The festival president, Ogün Şanlıer opened the conference featuring this year’s programme and introductions. Pointing out that Bosphorus Film Festival proceeds with sure steps towards becoming one of the most important film events in Turkey, both nationally and internationally, he continued: “We are honored to host in Istanbul the influential, master figures both from national and international cinema.” Underlying the importance of the contributions that the festival makes to the national film industry, Şanlier indicated that, Bosphorus Film Lab, organized by the institutional partnership of TRT, aims at providing financial and moral support to the young producers and directors in their endeavor to make new films.

 

Stating that 16 projects selected this year to Bosphorus Film Lab, will participate in the workshops to be realized with the globally renowned film consultant Hayet Benkara and will develop their projects in terms of co-production, Pitching and preparing financial plan, Ogün Şanlıer mentioned that this year, for the first time a project from abroad is being supported; namely “Barzak” by the Palestinian director Leyla Abbas and they believe that this will be a good starting point for extending Bosphorus Film Lab to the international filmmakers. In addition, Şanlıer emphasized that this year CGV Mars Film Distribution Award will also be provided for the first time and continued: ”As we are well-aware about the challenging aspects of the distribution besides the production process, our cooperation with CGV Mars that started this year is precious.”

 

Ahmet Misbah Demircan: “Beyoğlu is the place of fairy tales and dreams”

The supporters of the festival also attended in the Press Conference. Mayor of Beyoğlu Municipality and the President of Union of the Bosphorus Municipalities; Ahmet Misbah Demircan; thanked the participants for visiting Beyoğlu and continued: ““Beyoğlu is the place of fairy tales and dreams. Culture best suits to Beyoğlu. Hosting film festivals is so precious for us. Cinema, indeed started when the humankind saw his/her image at the water surface. Humankind loves to watch himself/herself, that’s what (s)he is. You wonder about yourself, you want to see your own reflection. You also want to see the world and be a part of the lived experiences of the others. And cinema is the only endeavor that can make this happen. You can travel around the world, express yourself and grasp others without even leaving your chair. Ahmet Misbah Demircan also told about his passion for short films and said “It is easy to make a long speech, what is important is to make a short one. Hence, I believe the significance of short filmmaking.”

 

In addition, Tuncay Yürekli, Vice President of TRT, Yılmaz Yaman, Marketing and Corporate Communication Director of Anadolu Agency, Barış Zavaroğlu, Director of Digital Media and Entertainment Services of Turkcell, Fatih Uysan, Corporate Communication Director of TürkMedya, Dilek Taşdemir, General Coordinator of Digiflame and Serdar Can, General Manager of CGV Mars Distribution also emphasized the great pleasure they feel in supporting the festival.

 

88 films from 41 countries!

Celebrating its sixth anniversary this year, Bosphorus Film Festival, to run from October 26 to November 3, will bring the latest works from Turkey and the world cinema to the Istanbulite cinephiles. To be opened with “The Old Man & The Gun”, a popular title among the lobbies as a prominent Oscar nominee starring the Oscar-winner actor Robert Redford, the festival will showcase a total of 88 films by 90 directors from 41 countries!

 

Serdar Akar as the Jury President

Hosting a special selection of the best films of the year, The National Feature Film Competition will provide one film with a 100,000 TL worth Grand Prix. Under the presidency of Serdar Akar; the National Feature Film Competition jury members; the actress Begüm Birgören, the director Andaç Haznedaroğlu; the screenwriter Ercan Mehmet Erdem, and the cinematographer Mehmet Aksın, will select the best film of the year. This year, 10 films will be judged by the jury: “Güvercin” by Banu Sıvacı, “Tuzdan Kaide” by Burak Çevik, “Sükut Evi” by Cafer Özgül, “Anons” by Mahmut Fazıl Coşkun, “Halef” by Murat Düzgünoğlu, “Babamın Kemikleri” by Özkan Çelik, “Son Çıkış” by Ramin Matin, “Güven” by Sefa Öztürk Çolak, “Kaos” by Semir Aslanyürek and “Borç” by Vuslat Saraçoğlu. And the winners will be announced at the Closing Ceremony to be held at Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall at the night of November 3 with the support of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Directorate of Culture.

 

Honorary Awards will be Given to Hamer and Loznitsa!

This year, the festival will give Honorary Awards to two master directors. Ukrainian auteur Sergei Loznitsa, acknowledged as one of the greatest living masters of documentary filmmaking, will receive his award at the Opening Ceremony to be held at Grand Pera on October 26, and Bent Hamer, acknowledged as one of the most important representatives of Scandinavian cinema, will receive his award at the Closing Ceremony.

 

Besides the national and international competitions, 6th Bosphorus Film Festival will present the Istanbulite cinephiles a week abundant with cinema with the sections of World Cinema, hosting the Turkey or Istanbul premieres of the highly anticipated films of the year, World of Documentaries, showcasing the awarded documentaries that witness our era, a Long March, composed of films focusing with an impressive film language on the refugee problem; which increasingly constitutes one of the most important problems of the 21st Century and Short Animations, bringing together this year’s awarded animations.

 

Free filmmaking classes from masters

Organized by 6th Bosphorus Film Festival with the cooperation of the Institutional Communication Partner TürkMedya, The Masterclass Programme, will also host the Portuguese producer Paulo Branco together with Bent Hamer and Sergei Loznitsa. Having worked with many influential figures throughout his career that started at the end of 1970’s, including David Cronenberg, Manoel de Oliveira, Wim Wenders, Chantal Akerman, Alain Tanner, Werner Schroeter, Pedro Costa, André Téchiné, Andrzej Zoulawski, Peter Handke, Teresa Villaverde, Michel Piccoli, Valéria Bruni-Tedeschi and Paul Auster, and acknowledged as one of the most important producers not only of his country Portugal, but also of the world cinema, Paulo Branco will be visiting Istanbul for the festival and will provide a filmmaking class at Soho House İstanbul on November 2, Friday.

Organized by International Bosphorus Cinema Association and Istanbul Media Academy, 6th Bosphorus International Film Festival will run this year from October 26 to November 3, 2018 in Istanbul and the screenings will take place in Atlas, Beyoğlu and Kadıkoy movie theatres. The tickets for all short film screenings will be available for 5 TL, and for feature films, regular tickets for 12.00 and 16.00 screenings will be available for 10 TL and for 19.00 and 21.30 screenings, 15 TL. Student tickets will be available for 5 TL for all the feature screenings. Starting from October 16, the festival tickets will be on sale at mobilet.com.
